Russia’s most advanced rig Yekaterina put in operation in Yamal

The most advanced drilling rig in Russia – Yekaterina – has been put in service in Yamal Peninsula. This is the first rig delivered to Tyumenburgaz under the modernization program that is handled by Uralmash-Burovoye Oborudovanie. The new drilling rig named Yekaterina BU-4200/250EK-BM (Ch) was put into operation in Zapolyarnoye field located in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District. The rig is a small-size unit able to move along rails within a cluster. The modules of the rig including screening module, tank module, pump module, compressor module, steam plant, and other modules are interconnected. The rig is intended for cluster drilling that is controlled by an operator from the cabin with the help of two joysticks, with parameters of the drilling process, top drive and drilling mud, etc. indicated on the monitor.
The crew never had experience of installing such drilling rigs because this is the first modular rig both in Tyumenburgaz and Burgaz. All rigging and adjustment operations performed by specialists from SSU, Servisburgaz and the power and water supply division of Tyumenburgaz were supervised by Uralmash-Burovoye Oborudovanie. The Field Service Department and UTTiST provided accommodation and transport. The installation of the 45-meter derrick took a bit more than 20 minutes. It was preceded by preliminary measures including 20-minute long test installation at a smaller height and keeping the equipment under load. After the SSU commission decided it was time to erect the derrick there was an audible click and the derrick slowly went up. The people supervising the event applauded: Yekaterina-1 was put in operation to drill in Zapolyarnoye field. Then the 250-ton top drive Canrig was installed. The first well was spudded by the new rig late in August. By the way, Yekaterina is the fifth of the eleven drilling rigs ordered by OJSC “Gazprom” from Uralmash – Burovoye Oborudovanie and the third one intended for Yamal. The first two rigs were supplied to Novy Urengoy. The rest of the rigs are now being delivered to fields of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District.
