This year is the 55^th anniversary of the All-Russian Institute of Drilling Equipment (VNIIBT). Today, the institute is part of one of Russia’s most dynamic companies – Integra Group. The All-Union Research and Development Institute of Oil and Gas Well Drilling (VNIIburneft)   was established on February 28, 1953 by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR “On expansion of oil and gas drilling research  and development of high performance drill bits” through consolidation of Design Bureau-2, Drilling Department of the Institute,  Multihole Drilling Department and Special Laboratory of Giproneftemash.  In 1957, the institute was named All-Union Research Institute of Drilling Equipment (VNIIBT) of the Planning Committee of the USSR.   In 1971, the supervision of VNIIBT was transferred to the Ministry of Oil Industry of the USSR.    The year 1991 saw establishment of the Research and Development Company “Burovaya Tekhnika” that was incorporated as an open joint stock company in 1996.   

 

Since  1980, VNIIBT has been the country’s main R&D institute engaged in designing and manufacturing of  drilling equipment and tools for the oil and gas industry. The institute coordinated the operation of more than 15 industry and regional R&D organizations and 20 manufacturing plants.   All requirements specifications for development of drilling rigs and downhole drilling equipment and tools, as well as technical documentation for their production had to be coordinated and approved by VNIIBT.  VNIIBT develops design and estimate documentation for well construction, performs project reviews, provides engineering services for well drilling and workover,  and driller training.  VNIIBT owns patented solutions that are more advanced than those in the U.S., Canada, England, Norway, Germany, France, Japan and other of the world’s  drilling leaders.

 

In different years, the most important divisions of the institute were headed by famous scientists such as  G.S.Barshay, G.I.Bulakh, Ya.A.Gelfgat, M.T. Gusman, A.A.Gaivoronsky, Yu.S.Vasiliev, R.A.Ioanesyan, A.G. Kalinin, E.G.Kister, M.I.Lipkes, B.I.Mitelman, A.S.Mokshin, G.A.Lyubimov, N.D.Scherbyuk, R.M.Eigels, A.M.Yasashin and others.   

The institute is currently headed by Ph.D. in Engineering, honorary oilman Garry Oganov. VNIIBT provides postgraduate training in discipline  25.00.15  “Drilling and Completion Technology” and has a dissertation council to assess dissertations for a degree of Ph.D. in discipline  25.00.15 “Drilling and Completion Technology”.
